Some people don’t eat falafel because it’s hard to find a recipe for falafel that doesnt involve deep frying. That person definiately isn’t me. My opinion is you only live once so you may as well enjoy the time you have here on earth. I also happen to beleive that stress has a much bigger impact on health than fried food. Just look at the French. They smoke more, eat more fat than all their neighbors but still have one of the lowest rates of heart disease in the EU. of course, they also eat less meat and more vegetables and dairy products than we do. Just something to think about while your sitting back enjoying your deliscious falafel sandwich..
Ok, so lets get started with what you will need to make this recipe.
Falafel Ingredients
- 2 fifteen ounce cans of chickpeas
- 1 small onion
- 2 tbs chives
- 2 tbs cilantro
- 1 1/2 tbs garlic powder
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 3 tablespooms flour
- oil for frying
Sandwich Ingredients
- Pita shells
- Chopped lettuce
- Chopped tomatoes
- Chopped black olives or pickels
- Chopped onions (optional)
- 1 cup tahini sauce
- 2 tbsp lemon juice
Directions
Put the chickpeas, flour, garlic powder, and other spices in a food processor until they are ground to the consistency of a thick paste. Form the paste into thick patties the size of a plum. Slightly flatten them and fry them in a deep frier at 350 degrees or in a skillet filled with 2 inches of oil. Remove them when they are golden brown and put them on a paper towel (this will remove some excess oil). Open the pita bread and fill it will the chopped lettuce, tomatos and pickels. Combine the Tahini sauce and lemon juice in a bowl and drizzle it over your sandwich for the finishing touch.
